A ruby-red infusion with a lively character
A small handful of dried hibiscus transforms water into a deep red infusion. Its fruity tartness is expressive enough to enjoy on its own, yet it also pairs beautifully with honey, sugar, orange, mint, ginger or cinnamon. Add it to loose-leaf tea or use it as the colourful base of a refreshing summer drink.
The pack contains one ingredient only: dried hibiscus flowers. No added sugar, flavourings, colourings or preservatives.
Hibiscus, karkade and zobo — one flower, many traditions
Hibiscus infusion is enjoyed under many names. Karkade is widely recognised in North Africa and the Middle East. In Nigeria, where our hibiscus comes from, the red drink prepared from the dried flowers is known as zobo. It may be served warm or well chilled, often with fruit and aromatic spices.
That versatility makes hibiscus equally suitable for a quiet cup of tea and a large jug shared with family or guests.
Ways to use dried hibiscus
- brew a full-flavoured hot infusion;
- chill the infusion and use it as a homemade lemonade base;
- blend it with black, green or fruit tea;
- combine it with mint, ginger, cinnamon or citrus peel;
- use it in syrups, punches and alcohol-free cocktails;
- add a small amount to your own herbal or floral blends.
Preparation
Hot infusion: add 1–2 teaspoons of hibiscus to approximately 250 ml of hot water. Cover and steep for 5–10 minutes, then strain. Adjust the amount and brewing time to your preferred intensity.
Cold drink: prepare a stronger infusion, allow it to cool and serve with ice, citrus fruit or mint. Alternatively, steep the hibiscus in cold water in the refrigerator for several hours and strain before serving.
